MULTI-VENTED GRID MOLDS
Recent advances in battery technology have placed increasingly stringent demands upon manufacturers in order to maintain a profitable, yet competitive, position in a very dynamic industry. Introduction of new casting alloys, lighter grid weights, tighter grid size and weight tolerances, while meeting acceptable quality standards and production levels forces battery manufacturers to consider future as well as current capabilities. Increased sophistication in manufacturing equipment is essential to successful survival in todays dynamic industrial climate.
"I know there are new changes on the horizon, so how can I best prepare for the future now?"
At Wirtz Manufacturing Company, we make it our business to keep abreast of new battery technology and casting alloy development. That is precisely why we conducted extensive research and development leading to a multi-vented grid mold design which meets inevitable future casting requirements today. Our 137, 738 or industrial style molds are available with our patented multi-vent bars on vertical wires in the mold.
Wirtz multi-vented grid molds offer these advantages over conventional surface venting:
- Immediate release of trapped air in grid cavity after lead pour.
- Faster grid fill in.
- Lower ladle temperatures.
- Higher casting speeds.
- Longer cork runs.
In turn, lighter weight and more intricate grids can be cast.
Because venting is in the grid cavity, mold coat does not need to function as a vent. Thus, cork can have tighter binding properties which will reduce wear and corking frequency. This is a less obvious, but never-the-less important benefit of multi-venting which directly affects production efficiency.
We have dwelt on many benefits of multi-vented grid molds for imminent future requirements, however, all these benefits can be achieved immediately regardless of grid design or alloys in use today. Thus, best justification may be preparation for meeting inevitable future increased production challenges with increased production a reality today!
