PREPARATION OF WIRTZ EXPORT GRID MOLDS PRIOR TO USE

Upon receipt of grid molds, certain preparations must take place before installing on the casting machine, as before leaving the factory the molds are coated with a heavy rust preventative grease which must be removed before heating or spraying for operation.

1. Remove the knockout bar and pins, by loosening four jam nuts on the knockout bolts and remove the bolts; the bars will then pull out allowing the pins and springs to be cleaned.

2. Wash the entire mold block and parts with a suitable washing agent such as kerosene, fuel oil, mineral spirits etc.

3. Replace the knockout bar and pins, taking care that the number stamped on the bar and mold block correspond. If installed wrong, damage to the mold, pins or both could result.

4. Turn bolts in until knockout pins set back into cavity area approximately .015" (.381mm) - .020 (.508mm). Be certain that pins are adjusted evenly across before locking jam nut.

5. Apply mold piping according to attached drawing _________________.

6. Mount mold on machine and heat to 300°F (149°C).

7. Inside the shipping box will be a 227g can of Oakite which is used as a washing agent when the mold is hot. Mix in the following manner.

a. Mix 113g of powdered Oakite with 2 liters of water.
NOTE: The Oakite must be added to the water:
DO NOT ADD WATER TO OAKITE.
b. The Oakite solution is very strong and care must be exercised when using. Rubber gloves and eye protection should be worn when mixing or applying.

8. After the mold reaches 300°F (149°C), remove the vent bar or bars in the following manner:

Remove the five 1/4-20 NC x 1" long socket head screws on the movable half. Replace with 2" (51mm) or 2-1/2" (64mm) long bolts and tap bolts gently with a hammer, starting at one end; thus removing the bar uniformly and not bending it.

9. Use a bristle (fiber) scrub brush, dip in Oakite solution and brush mixture on face of mold to clean the surface. Brush several times making sure the cavity that contained the vent bar is washed clean. Also wash the vent bar thoroughly.

10. Using clean water, rinse the mold surface clean of the Oakite solution.

11. Wire brush the mold surface, vent bar cavity and vent bar to remove any powdered Oakite left on the mold.

12. Replace vent bar in cavity and tap lightly with a wooden brush or hammer handle. Bar must be flush with mold face.

13. Replace 1/4-20 NC x 1" long socket head screws and snug the vent bar tight (care must be taken to insure screws do not bottom in holes and strip threads).

14. Heat the mold to 350°F (177°C).

15. Attach the air hose supplied with the machine, to the fitting at the front of the mold. A regulated air pressure of 20 PSI should be used. Wash the movable half of mold again, making certain air flow is emitting from vent.

16. Check the certification card for proper spray procedure and operating temperatures.
