ADJUSTMENTS & MAINTENANCE OF WIRTZ LEAD DISPENSE VALVE
Use drawing # M-37617-A (
at the bottom of the current page) for text reference

The Wirtz valve automatically dispenses the correct amount of lead into the ladle after each pour. The following is a description of the operation, adjustment procedures, and maintenance notes.

BASIC OPERATION

I. The valve circuitry monitors the ladle position with a limit switch. When the dispensing valve selector switch is in the automatic position, the limit switch will activate the dispensing valve for one cycle each time the ladle is tipped. The length of this cycle or the amount of lead dispensed is controlled by the dispensing timer.

II. Basic Adjustments of the Wirtz Lead Delivery Valve

A. Adjustments needed after starting lead pump.

1. Fill ladle to proper level

a) Turn the lead dispense selector switch, located on machine control panel, to the manual position.

b) Push button to activate cylinder. Watch lead level to get proper amount in ladle; approximately 1/16" below ladle tip.

2. Turn lead dispense selector switch to automatic position and set time for 1 second.

a) Graduations are in tenths of a second, large numbers designate full seconds.

3. Start machine and observe gate. If gate size is not satisfactory turn timer for more time to increase gate, or less time to decrease gate.

NOTE: Move timer pointer 1/10th of a second at a time.

B. Installation of Lead Seat

1. Using carbide ball check sealing of #3 (lead seat).

NOTE: Holding ball in place in the lead seat try to suck air through the lead seat. Ball should be pulled into seat and form a perfect seal. If a perfect seal is not formed place the seat in a tapped holding block, tap the carbide ball with a hammer lightly - to seat the ball. Repeat the seal test until a perfect seal is obtained.

2. Install #2 (gasket #640089) on #3 (lead seat #25301 or super seat #46280)

3. Using 7/8 socket wrench insert and tighten #3 (lead seat) into #1 (upper lead valve). Tighten securely to form good seal at gasket.

4. Place a small amount of grease or Never Seize compound on #6 (ball support) in bottom of #5 (lower lead valve).

5. Place #4 (ball) in grease and carefully insert #5 (lower lead valve) into #1 (upper lead valve). The ball should be centered and go into place in the center of #3 (lead seat).

6. Raise #8 (valve pivot arm) into place and close valve.

7. Install #23 (bolt) and #11 (spring).

8. Install #9 (retainer pivot arm).

9. Valve should be heated up and tested for positive shut off.

Ref: Section II Paragraph D

NOTE: Carbide ball is used for seating lead seat. Use ceramic ball part #9377 or premium ball #660242 for lead valve when in use.

C. Removal of Lead Seat

1. Remove #19 (extension - lower valve spout), #11 (spring), and #23 (screw).

2. Remove #9 (retainer pivot arm).

3. Holding #5 (lower lead valve body) lift #9 (valve pivot arm) until #5 (lower valve body) is free to be removed.

NOTE: #4 (ball) may come out with #5 (lower lead body) or stay in #3 (lead seat).

4. Using a 7/8 socket wrench carefully remove #3 (lead seat).

NOTE: Care must be used to prevent damage to fingers on lead valve seat.

5. Make sure #2 (gasket) is removed with #3 (lead seat). Gasket must be replaced each time #3 is removed.

NOTE: Use Wirtz part #29293 to clean old gasket from upper lead valve.

D. Test for Positive Shut Off

1. Remove #9 (extension lead valve).

2. Heat up valve, feedline and lead pot.

3. Turn on lead and manually dispense lead.

4. Observe lead flow coming out of valve.

5. Shut off valve and watch for valve leakage.

NOTE: Valve will drip for a few seconds after shut off. If a leak is present the valve will appear to splatter or continuous flow will result.

III. Maintenance of Lead Delivery System

A. Airmatic cylinder on lead dispense valve and ladle tip mechanism should be oiled once a week.

1. Remove 1/4" plug from tee at cylinder and squirt small amount of SAE 10W oil into tee. Replace plug and operate cylinder in manual cycle.

2. Oil rod of cylinder once a day with SAE 10W.

IV. Trouble Shooting System

PROBLEM

WHAT TO DO

Cylinder does not work manually

Check:

a) Air supply, min. 30 P.S.I.

b) Cylinder rod moves freely, #15 (coil) at base of cylinder.

c) Contact in selector switch.

In addition to previous checks, check:

a) Contacts of limit switch and that limit switch is being activated.

b) Check timer relay for voltage to it.

c) See if motor starts inside timer.

Cylinder does not work automatically

Check:

a) Lead pump operation.

b) Dross in valve.

c) Lead frozen in feedlines.

d) Flames of burners.

Lead does not come out of valve

Check:

a) Ball positioned in weldment properly.

b) Lead seat not tight in upper lead valve.

c) Seat worn excessively - check both lead seat #3 and ball support #6.

d) Make sure ball is clean and no foreign matter is laying in upper valve or valve body weldment. Make certain proper clearance between lifting link and push rod exists.

NOTE: In case of lead seat wear, remove seat and machine .020 - .040" from sealing face. Machine off sufficient amount to produce new smooth seating surface - chamfer sealing lip of seat .010" deep at 45°. If ball seat (#6) is worn excessively grind away weld on bottom of weldment (#5) and press seat out. Replace with new seat and re-weld into weldment.

In either case, the easiest remedy is to have a spare on hand for least amount of down time.

NOTE: When replacing lead seat use a high temperature lubricant.
